Day 4 of the virtual tour of our first trip to Kenya. On the road now on the way from Samburu to the Masai Mara via Lake Nakuru. As it is such a long drive (about 16 hours) we have to break the journey part way and stay overnight near the Lake Nakuru National Park; and of course I wanted to see the flamingoes and other bird life the Lake had to offer as well. Travelling by road although slower and in some cases bumpier we do get to see much more of Kenya and get a better feel for the country, its communities and wildlife. In fact the road from Isiolo to Samburu was a gravel, sandy and dusty road when we first travelled on it, the new road taking shape tantalising close by, the last time travelled that way the tarmac road is in use The road side shops fascinate me, most especially the butchers shops and the hotels, in some ways they remind me of the wild west film sets, all facade, but of course they are real buildings.
Lake Nakuru at that time still hosted massive flocks of Flamingoes, sadly they have since moved on to brinier waters but the Park (although small) still has a diverse range of wildlife including the White Rhino. It was staying here at a camp that we met a fabulous young waiter called Joseph who after several years of our regular visits became a friend, and we were pleased and proud to be able to support him to support his village, the people we meet along our journey enrich our lives in the same way the wildlife and Africa's diversity does.
The Community Wildlife Project aims to support the local communities who rely on tourism during the Covid-19 pandemic as well as existing anti-poaching units / organizations. Please check out the website and help in anyway you can, share the message. Conservation is in the hands of all of us.
